Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger, often characterised by feelings of fear, worry, or unease. While occasional anxiety is normal, chronic or intense anxiety can interfere with daily life and may require management or treatment.
Symptoms of anxiety include excessive worry, restlessness, trouble concentrating, irritability, rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. Some people may experience panic attacks, shortness of breath or chest pain.
Anxiety can be triggered by stress from work, school, relationships, financial concerns, or health issues. Biological factors, such as genetics or brain chemistry, and past trauma or significant life changes, may also contribute to anxiety.
To manage anxiety, try deep breathing exercises, grounding techniques, or progressive muscle relaxation. Practising mindfulness or using distractions, such as listening to music or taking a short walk, can also help reduce anxiety when it arises.
Long-term anxiety management includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and practising meditation or yoga. Establishing a routine, setting realistic goals, and engaging in activities that you enjoy to reduce overall anxiety levels.
